The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
CERT is a part of the New Castle County Citizen Corps.
The Advanced CERT class is open to all persons who have completed the Basic CERT class within the past 3 years. Advanced CERT training is much more hands on, and is designed to build upon the knowledge and practical skills acquired in the basic class, including: leadership and team-building exercises oriented to disaster response scenarios; advanced search and rescue training; and additional fire fighting training. The Advanced CERT class is also FREE OF CHARGE, and a box lunch will be provided to all students.
