New Castle County has some of the top health care and health education institutions in the country. Christiana Care Health System, headquartered in Wilmington, is one of the country's largest health care providers, ranking 16th in the nation for hospital admissions. With more than 10,000 employees, Christiana Care is the largest private employer in Delaware.
The Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is internationally recognized in blood and bone marrow transplantation, cancer, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and solid organ transplantation and it is a Level II Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Department. U.S. News & World Report 2010-11 edition of "Best Children's Hospitals"' named Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children as a leader in Orthopedics, Gastroenterology, and Urology.
St. Francis Hospital has been providing a full spectrum of general medical services in Wilmington since 1924. Services provided include advanced surgical specialists, the St. Francis Heart Center, 24-hour emergency services with fast-track minor emergency care, Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, da Vinci Surgical System, Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, and Comprehensive Women's Services.
In 2011, Health Care and Social Assistance represented 40,000 jobs in New Castle County.
