What are the average property taxes for a single family home in New Castle County?

All homes in New Castle County, (i.e.: existing and new house construction) are assessed for property taxes at 1983 valuation rates. New house construction property assessments use existing home property assessment rates for homes of similar size, quality and location to determine the 1983 valuation rate.
 
Based on an average assessed home value of $71,700 (approximate market value of $259,568 within the unincorporated area of the County) the average household pays $503 in County taxes annually, or approximately $41.83 per month.

Tax rates on personal income in Delaware range from 2.2% to 5.55% for incomes under $60,000.  Incomes over $60,000 are taxed at 6.95%, but will be reduced to 5.95% by 2014.

Can I get information on K-12 schools in New Castle County?

New Castle County public and private schools and colleges and universities are recognized for excellence, which is best reflected in the many educational programs made available to students. The School Choice Program allows students to attend any public school in New Castle County, provided there is capacity. Our six public school districts have extensive program offerings that are bound to meet the specific needs of every child and adult learner. In addition, New Castle County has four vocational technical high schools.
 
Because of the state’s dedication to students and educational reforms, Delaware was showcased as the first recipient of the federal Race to the Top grant award totaling $119 million. Initiatives include developing strong partnerships between local schools, communities and businesses, a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, and teacher effectiveness.

What colleges and universities are in New Castle County?

The main campus of the University of Delaware is located in the city of Newark just 25 miles from APG. The University of Delaware, which has over 19,000 students and offers over 100 academic majors, was named #68 by U.S. News and World Report among “Best National Universities.” Other colleges include Delaware Technical and Community College, Delaware College of Art and Design, Wilmington University, Goldey Beacom College, and Widener Law School.

Will state funded Universities/Colleges in Delaware offer in-state tuition rates to transferring BRAC personnel?

It is expected that some military, civilian and contractor personnel who are assigned to APG will choose to reside in Delaware. It is also expected that reassignments may result in some personnel temporarily not having the in state tuition privilege.  To remedy this situation, special condition will be extended to military personnel who are assigned to APG and who, as a result of that reassignment, reside in Delaware. With State concurrence, the special condition also will be extended to civilian employees of or contractors with the Armed Forces of the United States who find themselves in similar circumstances. In either case, the special condition will apply to personnel who relocate on or before September 15, 2011.

What types of hospitals and specialty care facilities are available?

New Castle County has some of the top health care and health education institutions in the country. Christiana Care Health System, headquartered in Wilmington, is one of the country’s largest health care providers, ranking 16th in the nation for hospital admissions.  This not-for-profit, non-sectarian health system, has two hospitals with more than 1,100 patient beds.  Christiana Care is recognized as a regional center for excellence in cardiology, cancer and women’s health services, and is home to a Level I trauma center and Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit.

The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children offers a treatment philosophy and level of care and comfort that sets the standard for children’s health care, and was rated among the U.S. News & World Report 2010-11 listing of Best Children’s Hospitals.

 

St. Francis Hospital has been providing a full spectrum of general medical services in Wilmington since 1924, including the St. Francis Heart Center, 24-hour emergency services with fast-track minor emergency care, Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, da Vinci Surgical System, Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, Sleep/Neurodiagnostics Center, and more.

Will there be mass transit available to APG?

Delaware Transit Corp., with assistance from the U.S. Department of Transportation, is currently undertaking plans to redevelop the Newark Train Station and provide commuter rail service from Newark, Delaware to APG.  The train station will be located at the University of Delaware’s new science and technology campus and mixed use development at the 272-acre former Chrysler facility.

What is the actual commuting time between Newark, DE and APG?

The driving time from Newark, DE to APG is approximately 30-35 minutes via interstate I-95.

What mass transit is available in Delaware?

New Castle County, Delaware is located within 1 hour of both the Philadelphia International Airport and Baltimore-Washington INternational Airport. It is also home to the New Castle County Airport a regional and small plane facility.
 
Regional and local rail commuter rail service to points North and South is provided by Amtrak and SEPTA.
