Dog Licenses

In January 2010, the State of Delaware turned over administration of dog licensing to the counties. Residents of New Castle County must obtain dog licenses from the county; residents of the City of Wilmington will continue to purchase their licenses from the City.

Individual Dog License Requirements

  • Licenses are issued for each calendar year beginning January 1 and ending December 31.
  • All dogs 6 months of age or older as of Jan 1 of a given calendar year must be licensed for that year.
  • State law allows a 60 day grace period for obtaining a license which means that all licenses must be obtained by March 1st.
  • Each dog being licensed must have a current rabies vaccination at the time the license is issued.
