Property Code Enforcement

Code Enforcement investigates complaints regarding violations of County zoning, property maintenance and building codes; conducts sweeps in troubled neighborhoods and inspects randomly-selected rental housing units.  Code Enforcement cannot enforce other codes or violations on public streets and other areas.

Upon receiving a complaint, Code Enforcement sends a courtesy letter to the property owner advising them of the allegation and giving them time to correct the violation before an inspection takes place.  Upon inspection, those whose property violates property maintenance standards may receive a ticket, much the same way that one receives a traffic ticket for speeding.

 

The cost of a ticket is $50, although failure to correct the violation could cause the penalty to increase. Tickets may be paid online or by mail.  If a property has been found in violation in the past 12 months, a courtesy letter may not be sent.

 

Other violations result in the issuance of a violation notice and a timeframe for correction of the violation(s).  Failure to correct within the timeframe allotted may lead to charges being filed in court.
