Delaware public schools are focused on providing students with the requisite skills and knowledge in the core academic subjects Colleges and Universitiesof English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. These skills and knowledge provide students the foundation to succeed in college and the workplace, and to become informed, engaged citizens. These efforts have lead to Delaware being recognized by the College Board as the second ranked state in the nation in percentage of increase of students who received a score of 3 or higher in Advanced Placement exams. The report covered the six year period from 2000-2006.

New Castle County is home to the 21,000-student University of Delaware in Newark, and a number of smaller colleges in the area. The University of Delaware offers an impressive collection of educational resources. Undergraduates may choose from over 100 academic majors.
